Smith takes double win as Trucks return to Brands Hatch

Saturday, June 05 2021

Ryan Smith kicked off the 2021 British Truck Racing in fine style at Brands Hatch this afternoon (Saturday), taking two outright wins from as many races on the Indy circuit in his Mercedes Actros.

The five-time reigning champion stormed to an emphatic victory in the earlier of the two races, leading frrom start to finish and leaving his rivals in his wake.

He started from the back of the Division 1 grid in race two courtesy of the reverse grid system, and picked his way through the field following an early red flag period. Once at the front, Smith again stormed to win by more than 10 seconds.

Martin Gibson was the other driver to bag a double overall podium, placing third in each of the races in his Man TGX.

Multiple champion Stuart Oliver took second in the opening race, shadowing Smith in the early stages before his rival built a more substantial gap. In the second race, Oliver was one of those unlucky enough to be caught up in a turn one incident. Following a brief excursion through the gravel, Oliver rejoined the grid for the restart and drove to fourth.

David Jenkins, fourth in the opening battle, negotiated the early action in race two and found himself in the front-running pack to take the runner-up spot. John Newell and Mark Taylor both enjoyed strong runs towards the front of the overall field, finishing fifth and sixth respectively in each of today's two races.

Division 2 honours went to local driver and defending class champion Steve Powell in the earlier race before Adam Bint, another former winner of the class crown took victory in the evening contest.
