Trio of British Truck Racing winners at Brands Hatch on Sunday

Sunday, June 06 2021

There were three different overall winners in as many races in the British Truck Racing Championship races on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit today (Sunday).

Ryan Smith went into the first race of the day as the man to beat, both as a five-time reigning champion and the driver who'd already won the weekend's opening two races on Saturday. Smith duly delivered a convincing win in the third truck race of the meeting this morning, taking the chequered flag by more than seven seconds in his Division 1 Mercedes Actros.

The opening race was halted twice for drivers running into the Paddock Hill Bend gravel trap, but once it got going it was John Newell and Mark Taylor who claimed their first podium finishes of the season behind the leader.

It was someone else's turn to win in the fourth race of the weekend, second of the day, however. Martin Gibson made good his escape during the early exchanges whilst Smith had to battle hard to make his way up the order from the reverse grid start. Stuart Oliver and David Jenkins in particular both enjoyed good scraps with Smith's machine, the latter eventually claiming the final spot in the top three after Smith passed him for second.

Taylor improved upon his earlier podium visit in the final race of the weekend, storming home to a superb victory from Oliver's Volvo. Newell too made his second visit to the podium of the weekend, holding off a late charge from Smith in the final laps.

Smith had to make his way up the order from the back after a spin on lap one, but duly delivered a series of blisteringly quick lap times to make his way back to fourth and limit the damage.

Further back, in the Division 2 class, Craig Reid won two of the day's three races. Local driver Steve Powell will have been delighted with a second win of the weekend on home soil, before closing things out with second in the finale.
