Testing ahead of this year's Motul FIM Superbike World Championship continued in Portugal this week (31 January-1 February), with the top four riders all smashing the previous lap record at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve.

Reigning champion Alvaro Bautista was fastest for Aruba.it Ducati, with a time almost six tenths of a second faster than Jonathan Rea's existing lap record, despite a crash in the final morning.

Kawasaki's Rea wasn't far behind though, with the Northern Irishman just 0.009s slower with his effort which also came on Wednesday morning. Bautista's teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi was also in the mix and just a tenth of a second further behind.

2021 champion Toprak Razgatlioglu, who was the pace setter at Jerez last week, was fourth on the new Pata Yamaha Prometeon machine, and also within lap record pace.

His teammate Andrea Locatelli was a couple of tenths further back in fifth, and just outside the lap record, with Iker Lecuona the top Honda rider in sixth.

MotoGP covert Remy Gardner was seventh on the GYTR GRT Yamaha ahead of Lecuona's Honda teammate Xavi Vierge, with Brits Tom Sykes (Puccetti Kawasaki) and Alex Lowes (Kawasaki) completing the top-10.

The Portuguese test was the final running in Europe ahead of the new season, with the next test taking place at Australia's Phillip Island on 20-21 February, before the first round at the same venue on 24-26 February.
