Rea romps to Superpole race victory

Sunday, July 07 2019

Race One winner Jonathan Rea stormed to another Donington Park victory in this morning's WorldSBK Tissot Superpole Race, with the race red flagged after a dramatic multi-bike shunt.

Rea was embroiled in a race long scrap with Tom Sykes, making a robust move stick on lap five and then holding the lead until the race was red flagged at the end of lap seven when a blown engine for Peter Hickman dropped oil at the Melbourne Hairpin, with five bikes crashing out as a result.

Tom Sykes was another rider to fall, though on the warm down lap, and lost his second place as a result as he was unable to get back to Parc Ferme within the designated time.

Toprak Razgatlioglu and Leon Haslam therefore claimed second and third to complete the podium, with former championship leader Alvaro Bautista fourth ahead of Loris Baz and local man Alex Lowes.

Chaz Davies was seventh ahead Michael van der Mark, with Jordi Torres and Marco Melandri completing the top-10.

Sykes made a good start from pole position, but Rea immediately seemed faster to challenge around the first lap. He made his first attempt to move past at the Fogarty chicane on lap three, but Sykes fought back immediately to retake the lead.

But two laps later, Rea got a strong drive out of Coppice to draw alongside at the Fogarty's Chicane, with the pair almost making contact before Rea forced his way through.

Sykes stuck with him though, while Razgatlioglu found a way past Haslam at the Melbourne Hairpin. As Sykes looked to fight back, Hickman's engine blew at Melbourne, with Sandro Cortese, Leandro Mercado, Alessandro Delbianco and Ryuichi Kiyonari all falling out of the race. The red flags flew immediately, but it still wasn't enough for Sykes, who fell at the same point on his way back to the pits and lost his second place as a result.

The WorldSBK field are back in action for Race Two at 2pm.
