GB3 QUALIFYING: Dominant double pole for O'Sullivan at Oulton Park

Saturday, September 11 2021

Carlin's Zak O'Sullivan stormed to a double pole in GB3 Championship, in association with the BRDC, qualifying at Oulton Park this morning, after dominating the 20 minute session.

The British driver, who could claim the championship this weekend, was unbeatable throughout, at one stage being almost seven tenths of a second clear of the opposition.

Fortec debutant Luke Browning was able to close the gap down to 0.126s at the end of the session, with Chris Dittmann Racing's Ayrton Simmons third, just over half a second away from O'Sullivan's scintillating time.

On the race two grid, which is determined by each driver's second fastest qualifying times, O'Sullivan made it a double pole, with an advantage of 0.142s over Browning once more, with Roberto Faria third fastest.

Pole looked to be a battle between Browning and O'Sullivan in the early stages, but O'Sullivan took control with a string of laps in the second half of the session.

His eventual pole time of 1m31.015s came with over five minutes to go, and remained unbeaten despite Browning's late efforts.

Simmons was a late improver to climb from the lower reaches of the top-10 to third, 0.018s quicker than Fortec's Faria.

Hitech GP's Bart Horsten was 0.063s further back with the fifth fastest time, two hundredths of a second ahead of Carlin's Christian Mansell, who was just seven thousandths clear of Elite's Javier Sagrera.

Reece Ushijima was eighth for Hitech, 0.021s away from the Spaniard and 0.075s ahead of Elite's Tom Lebbon.

Arden's Frederick Lubin completed the top-10, which was covered by 0.936s.

O'Sullivan and Browning were again clear of the field on the second fastest times, with Faria three tenths of a second behind the pair, with Horsten and Mansell climbing to fourth and fifth.

Sagrera is sixth on the race two grid, while Simmons drops to seventh, with Lebbon, Ushijima and Lubin completing the top-10.

The first race of the weekend is due to commence at 14.25, with live timing available on the GB3 Championship website.
