Kevin Mills Racing's Tom Mills claimed his first GB4 win at Brands Hatch, after a dramatic first race of the weekend on the Grand Prix circuit.

Mills finished just a tenth of a second clear of Elite's Jack Sherwood, after a thrilling late scrap following a safety car, brought out when pole sitter and championship leader Nikolas Taylor crashed out at Paddock Hill as rain began to fall.

Jarrod Waberski completed a decent opener for Kevin Mills Racing by taking third ahead of championship challenger Max Marzorati, while Fortec's Jessica Edgar was close behind in fifth.

Hillspeed's Megan Gilkes climbed from ninth on the grid to sixth ahead of Graham Brunton Racing's Chloe Grant, with Logan Hannah the final classified finisher after picking up a time penalty mid-race.

Taylor led the field on the first lap, but only after holding off the attentions of Waberski, who challenged around the outside of Paddock Hill Bend and Druids.

Taylor began to build a lead in pursuit of his fourth successive win, but the darkening skies relented on the fourth lap and Taylor slid out at Paddock Hill Bend and crunched his suspension against the barrier, while Waberski also held a wild slide.

That brought out the safety car, which circulated until lap seven when action restarted. It immediately became clear that the lead battle was between Waberski, Mills and Sherwood, with the KMR battle allowing Sherwood to pass both cars inside three corners on lap eight, only to run wide exiting Surtees and dropping back to third.

The trio continued to circulate almost as one, but on the penultimate lap, Mills took the lead with a brave move around the outside of Hawthorns, and held off a last lap challenge from Sherwood.

The result has big ramifications for the championship, as Taylor and Waberski are now level on points, while Waberski is less than 50 points behind.

The second race of the weekend is scheduled for 12.10 tomorrow (Sunday).
