BTCC R2: Sutton takes title as Cook doubles up at Brands Hatch

Sunday, October 24 2021

Josh Cook won his second Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship race of the day on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit this afternoon as Ashley Sutton secured his third crown in the UK's leading car racing series with sixth place.

Cook led the whole race for the second time today, fending off the attention of the chasing pack through Paddock Hill Bend and Druids on the opening lap to secure a lead he would go on to hold. His BTC Racing teammate Senna Proctor was less fortunate as he locked up and went off at Druids just moments into the race.

A handful of corners later, there was an on-track tangle involving Ollie Jackson, Tom Oliphant and Adam Morgan. With cars scattered across the track, the safety car was summoned with Cook leading from Daniel Lloyd and Gordon Shedden.

Behind the lead group, the focus was on Sutton and his sole remaining title rival, Team BMW's Colin Turkington. Turkington managed to pass Sutton at the start, and all eyes were on the Northern Irishman as he aimed to progress and keep his title fight going until the final race later this afternoon.

Turkington was able to pass Daniel Rowbottom late in the race, but with Sutton still just two places behind in sixth, it always looked unlikely that the championship hunt would continue beyond this contest. A late safety car following an off for Nicolas Hamilton bunched the pack up again, but Turkington and Sutton remained in fourth and sixth, settling the title.

Behind the champion, Rory Butcher was seventh from Tom Chilton and Stephen Jelley, who will start the final race of the season from pole position following the reverse grid draw. Jake Hill completed the top-10 at his home circuit.
