Voisin takes maiden win in wild opening GB3 Donington contest

Saturday, May 28 2022

Carlin's Callum Voisin headed a 1-2 for the team in a dramatic opening GB3 Championship race of the weekend at Donington Park.

The British driver started third, but took advantage of a collision on the opening lap between pole sitter Joel Granfors and fellow front-row starter Matthew Rees.

The pair went wheel to wheel around the first lap, and after almost banging wheels at Redgate, came together on the exit of McLeans, spinning Granfors out of the race, delaying Rees and also eliminating Luke Browning, who bounced over the grass.

That promoted Voisin and teammate Roberto Faria into first and second, with Voisin able to extend a comfortable lead over his teammate and claim his first single-seater win by 2.2 seconds.

Faria in second thrust himself back into title contention with his third podium of the season, while Douglas Motorsport's Max Esterson claimed a debut podium after challenging Faria throughout.

Arden's Alex Connor claimed a best result of the year so far with fourth place, clear of Elite's Tom Lebbon in fifth, with his teammate James Hedley taking sixth.

Several drivers were able to take advantage of the first lap melee to make strong gains up the field. McKenzy Cresswell started 12th but finished seventh for Chris Dittmann Racing, well clear of Fortec's Zak Taylor who started 16th.

JHR's Rees claimed ninth after his dramas and a 10 second penalty for a false start, while Cresswell's teammate Branden Oxley shot up from 19th on the grid to complete the top-10 after emerging on top of an entertaining battle with Douglas Motorsport's Marcos Flack and Hitech's Bryce Aron.

The second race of the weekend is due to commence at 10.07 tomorrow morning, with full live streaming available on the official GB3 website.
