Taylor wins Silverstone GB4 slipstream thriller

Sunday, May 08 2022

Fortec's Nikolas Taylor won his second GB4 race of the weekend after a slipstreaming thriller at Silverstone on Sunday morning.

After an intense first half of the race that saw him collide with championship rival Alex Walker while battling for the lead on the first lap, Taylor fought back from fourth after a safety car and claimed a scintillating victory, to draw equal on points with Walker at the top of the standings.

Taylor started from pole, but it was Max Marzorati from second who got the best start to lead the field to Copse on lap one. But moments later it was three wide for the lead down to Stowe, with Walker and Taylor moving past the Hillspeed contender.

Now in the lead, Walker looked to pull away but Taylor had him firmly in his sights. Taylor attempted to go around the outside of the Loop, but the pair made contact with Walker retiring with suspension damage and Taylor dropping to fourth.

That brought out the safety car, with Hillspeed holding a 1-2 with Marzorati and Megan Gilkes, while Tom Mills moved up to third.

The safety car pitted at the end of lap two, and Marzorati made a great start to lead the pack away. But for the next few laps the race turned into a slipstreaming battle with as many as eight cars line astern.

On the restart lap, Taylor managed to pass Mills and Gilkes in the space of two corners, but next time around it was Mills' turn to use the slingshot and powered his way into the lead.

Mills held the lead for a lap but Taylor was still tucked up under his rear wing, and made a brave move around the outside of Copse corner.

From there, Taylor found a way to break the tow, establishing a two second lead within a couple of laps, while Mills' teammate Jarrod Waberski moved up to second ahead of Marzorati.

That would remain the podium order, with Taylor winning by over five seconds from Waberski, while Marzorati made it five podiums from six races with third.

Gilkes took fourth ahead of Elite's Jack Sherwood, with Fortec's Elias Adestam taking sixth.

Lucas Romanek continued his good start to life in GB4 with seventh for Oldfield Motorsport, while Logan Hannah out-dragged Mills to take eighth on the line for Graham Brunton Racing.

Fortec's Jessica Edgar completed the top-10.

The final race of the weekend is due to commence at 15.45, with full live streaming available once more.
