Taylor triumphs in opening Donington GB4 contest

Saturday, May 28 2022

Nikolas Taylor converted pole into his fourth race win of the season in the opening GB4 Championship race of the weekend at Donington Park.

Fortec's British-Malaysian contender led from lights to flag, but had to fend off a challenge from Hillspeed's Max Marzorati, who made a good start from third on the grid to take second at the start.

Marzorati claimed yet another podium with second and had to defend heavily for much of the race from Elite's Alex Walker immediately behind him, until Walker fell down the order late on after running wide at the Old Hairpin.

That freed Marzorati to attack Walker on the final lap, finishing just three tenths behind at the flag.

Daryl DeLeon took a podium on debut after capitalising on Walker's late dramas, while Kevin Mills Racing's Tom Mills banked his best result since Oulton Park with fourth.

Walker was fifth in the end, just ahead of teammate Jack Sherwood at his local track, while Hillspeed's Megan Gilkes dropped from second on the grid to seventh.

Jarrod Waberski was eighth for Kevin Mills Racing, ahead of Valour's other debutant Danny Harrison, with Graham Brunton Racing's Logan Hannah completing the top-10.

Taylor made a good start from pole while Walker moved up to second from third, and went for a move for the lead at Redgate. Walker was forced wide and dropped behind Marzorati, allowing Taylor to build a lead on the first lap.

Taylor built up a strong lead in the opening stages of the race, at one point over two seconds, but Marzorati was able to gain in the latter stages, bringing Walker along with him.

But Walker's late slip at the Old Hairpin relieved some of the pressure, and allowed Marzorati to challenge on the final lap, and only just missed out on a maiden win.

The second race of the weekend is due to start at 11.16 tomorrow morning, with full live streaming available on the official GB4 website.
