Taylor holds off Walker for second GB4 win of the year

Saturday, May 07 2022

Fortec's Nikolas Taylor claimed his second victory of the season with a battling performance in the first GB4 race of the weekend at Silverstone.

Taylor took the lead with a pass on Elite Motorsport's pole sitter Walker on lap two, and led thereafter despite Walker hovering close behind for the whole contest.

Walker had led the field down to Copse on the first lap, while Walker's front-row starting teammate Jack Sherwood dropped down to sixth, promoting Taylor, Max Marzorati and Elias Adestam up the order.

Walker led by just a couple of tenths of a second at the end of the first tour, and Taylor was fully tucked under his rear wing. Exiting Club corner on the second lap, Taylor made his move, though Walker squeezed him as close to the pit wall as he could. Taylor held firm and completed the move at Abbey.

But the wide expanses of the Silverstone GP circuit made breaking away almost impossible, and for a couple of laps there were eight drivers in a train of cars for the lead. Taylor, Walker, Marzorati, Adestam, Megan Gilkes, Sherwood, Jarrod Waberski and newcomer Lucas Romanek were in close company as they swarmed over each other down the long straights.

Gradually though, Taylor and Walker at the front were just able to start pulling away, though a true scrap for the lead didn't quite materialise. The gap between the two was rarely more than half a second, but across the final two laps, Taylor showed his pace to pull out an eight tenths of a second lead at the flag, despite a slightly loose engine cover.

Walker in second finished almost four seconds clear of Hillspeed's Marzorati, who banked his fourth podium in the last five races.

Fortec's Adestam was just four tenths of a second behind at the flag, and a couple of seconds clear of Sherwood who recovered to fifth.

Gilkes claimed sixth for Hillspeed, three tenths behind the Elite driver and 0.7s clear of Kevin Mills Racing's Jarrod Waberski.

Oldfield Motorsport's Romanek took eighth on his GB4 debut ahead of former Formula Ford rival Tom Mills, with Logan Hannah completing the top-10 after an entertaining late battle.

The second GB4 race of the weekend at Silverstone is due to commence at 09.30 tomorrow, with full live streaming available on the GB4 website.
