Masters Historic: Hartley's McLaren MP4/1 wins at Brands Hatch

Sunday, May 29 2022

Steve Hartley produced a sublime performance in his McLaren MP4/1, to claim victory in the second Masters Racing Legends race of the weekend on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit this afternoon (Sunday).

Hartley started from the rear of a field of '70s and '80s F1 cars at the Kent circuit, following his retirement from the lead in yesterday's contest. He offered a rapid reminder of the pace he'd shown earlier in the weekend immediately by rising to second in the order behind only Saturday victor Miles Griffiths.

Griffiths, a late entrant to the meeting in his Fittipaldi F5A took race one honours after dueling with Hartley on Saturday prior to the latter's technical retirement, and duly started today's race from pole position. Griffiths made the most of this advantage to build a lead early on, and was well over 10 seconds clear of Hartley at one point before the McLaren driver cleared the rest of the pack.

Once in the clear air of second position however, Hartley was able to set a sequence of super fast laps to sit right on the tail of Griffiths' yellow machine. As the race entered its final 10 minutes Hartley was right on the leader's tail. But in a repeat of Saturday's wheel-to-wheel battle, Griffiths was brave on the brakes and made it very difficult for Hartley to force an opening.

Hartley eventually made a decisive move out on the woodland Grand Prix section of the lap on lap 14 after getting a good run on Griffiths at Surtees. Once in the lead, Hartley avoide the mechanical misfortune of the previous day to sail home to the chequered flag. Griffiths finished a comfortable runner-up, seven seconds behind.

Warren Briggs completed the podium to ensure that two cars from the McLaren marque featured on the podium with a solid drive in his M29. He just pipped Ian Simmonds's Tyrrell 012 to the final place on the rostrum with Steve Brooks completing the top-five in a Lotus 91.
