BRDC British F3 graduate Hoggard gets F1 run at Silverstone

Wednesday, October 21 2020

Last season's BRDC British Formula 3 Championship runner-up Johnathan Hoggard took part in a maiden F1 test yesterday (20 October) as part of his prize for winning the 2019 Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award.

Hoggard won seven races in last year's BRDC British F3 Championship, the most by any driver on that season's grid, to secure his nomination for the prestigious award. The young Brit then won the main prize, which also includes a fund of £200,000 after impressing behind the wheel of a Ligier LMP3, Aston Martin GT3 and one of MSV's very own F2 machines.

Hoggard's test opportunity came at Silverstone yesterday in one of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing's RB8s, as driven to the F1 drivers' crown by Sebastian Vettel in 2012, a season in which the team also scooped the constructors' title with Mark Webber in the second car.

Following an initial installation run on wet tyres, Hoggard was treated to three full runs in the RB8 on slick rubber, around the full Grand Prix circuit at the Northamptonshire venue. His pace was impressive too, ultimately lapping within 1.5s of the fastest lap time at the 2012 British Grand Prix, albeit on a slightly different tyre compound, and running without the car's kinetic energy recovery system.

Speaking to Autosport, Hoggard said: "It's a dream come true to drive an F1 car, especially around Silverstone GP. The main thing was how much power it had, especially on full throttle, and the downforce with the blown diffuser - you can get on the power and it really does stick. I was trying not to leave anything on the table - it could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity so I'd have regretted it if I'd stayed in my comfort zone."
