BRDC British F3 gets underway for 2020 at Oulton Park this weekend

Tuesday, July 28 2020

The BRDC British F3 Championship belatedly returns to action for 2020 at Oulton Park this weekend, when an international grid of young drivers will take to the picturesque International circuit for four races, rather than the three we have become accustomed too.

The new race format for this weekend comes as British F3 retains a full, 24-race calendar for this season across a truncated seven-weekend schedule. This weekend's Oulton Park event is one of three which will include an additional race, for which grid positions will be determined by the average of a driver's fastest two laps from the prior three races.

Race two will continue to be a reverse-grid thriller, with bonus points available for drivers that gain the most positions.

BRDC British F3's stalwart teams have returned for this season, with Carlin, Lanan Racing, Double R Racing, Chris Dittmann Racing (CDR), Hillspeed and Douglas Motorsport all fielding cars this weekend. They are joined this season by successful F3 and F2 squad Hitech GP, which announced its intention to field two cars in 2020 in June, with Reece Ushijima the first driver to join its ranks shortly afterwards.

Carlin claimed last year's title with Clement Novalak and fields two drivers with experience of last year's championship this weekend. Kaylen Frederick stays with the team with which he drove last year to two victories, including one at the Cheshire circuit at Easter. Fellow race-winner Nazim Azman steps across to Carlin from CDR whilst Guilherme Peixoto completes the three-strong line-up.

Whilst Carlin won on the physical track last season, CDR will be hoping that some of its form from the virtual world will carry over this weekend, after claiming both the drivers and teams crowns in the inaugural British F3 iRacing series. Nico Varrone from Argentina, champion of the iRacing series, who raced part-time and took a race win with Hillspeed last season will be joined by Josh Skelton in a two-car effort this weekend.

Double R Racing has twice fielded champion drivers in this championship since it became BRDC British F3 in 2016. The team will be hoping for another strong season with a driver line-up comprising Benjamin Pedersen, who won a race for Douglas last season, and Louis Foster who won six races in the F4 British Championship last year.

Douglas Motorsport and Lanan Racing will both be hoping for strength in numbers this year, with each fielding no fewer than three cars for the opening round of the championship this weekend. Douglas's line-up includes two of its 2019 line-up in Ulysse de Pauw who will be chasing a first win in the series, and race-winner Kiern Jewiss who finished last season as one of the championship's strongest competitors with seven podiums in 10 races. Manaf Hijjawi will complete the team's roster and will become the first Jordanian to race in UK single-seaters this weekend.

Lanan returns to a full-strength, three-car effort this season after running a single full-time effort for Josh Mason in 2019. Mason returns to the team this year alongside decorated kart racer Piers Prior who is making his full-time switch to car racing this year, and Australian British F4 race-winner Bart Horsten.

Hillspeed is another team which has been a long-time supporter of the series, and 2020 will be particularly special for the Derbyshire-based team as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. The two drivers lining up for the team this weekend will be Oliver Clarke, who has previously raced in the USA F4 Championship and race-winner Sasakorn 'Cutter' Chaimongkol who remains with the team for successive campaigns.

At the time of writing, there are still a handful of slots on the grid which could be filled between now and the weekend, whilst other competitors are expected to join the line-up at later rounds.
