BRDC British F3 alumni news: Fittipaldi and Mazepin to F1

Tuesday, December 01 2020

It's been a busy week for former BRDC British Formula 3 Championship drivers, being promoted to F1 race seats. Firstly, it was announced that Pietro Fittipaldi would race for the Haas F1 Team at this weekend's Sakhir Grand Prix, before Nikita Mazepin was confirmed as a race driver for the same outfit in 2021 this morning (Tuesday).

Fittipaldi was a race-winner in the championship during its BRDC F4 years in 2013, and claimed multiple podiums in that year's BRDC F4 Winter Championship. He's since been a champion in Formula Renault and World Series Formula V8 3.5, and joined Haas F1 Team as test driver ahead of this season following stints in DTM, IndyCar and The World Endurance Championship.

The Brazilian grandson of two-time F1 World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi gets his race opportunity as an injury replacement for Romain Grosjean, following his accident at last weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix.

Mazepin, race-winner at Snetterton in 2016 - the championship's first year as BRDC British F3 - was then confirmed as one of the team's full-time drivers for 2021. The Russian raced in the championship as a guest driver with Carlin that year, and has more recently raced in GP3 and the FIA Formula 2 Championship where he's been a race-winner.

This continues the championship's tradition of producing high calibre drivers for the world stage, with other graduates currently on the F1 grid including George Russell and Lando Norris.
