New hero in WorldSBK as Bautista does the triple down under!

Monday, February 25 2019

There's a new man to beat in World Superbikes, as ex-MotoGP ace Alvaro Bautista stunned the paddock with a triple win on his series debut in Australia last weekend.

The Spaniard, riding a Ducati, didn't just win, but he pulverised the opposition, taking his first win by almost 15 seconds in race one, then winning again in the new Sunday Superpole contest by just over a second after a thrilling scrap with reigning four-time champion Jonathan Rea. Victory in the Superpole event on Sunday morning gave Bautista pole for the final race, and he made it a whitewash, taking the flag 12 seconds clear of his nearest rivals, and becoming the first rider to win all races on his debut weekend since John Kocinski in 1996.

Former series dominator Rea claimed his Kawasaki team 'took a knife to a gunfight,' despite taking pole for the first race, but still bagged three second places from the weekend. He's a man not used to being beaten, so he'll be fired up for an instant fightback over the next few rounds.

While Bautista and Rea look to be set for an epic title tussle, there were positive results elsewhere for Leon Haslam. The reigning Bennetts British Superbike champion bounced back from a crash in race one to claim a pair of third-place finishes on his full-time World Superbike return, and matched teammate Rea for pace, while Alex Lowes was within the top five all weekend.

Donington Park hosts the only UK round of the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship on 5-7 July, with a new three-race format to look forward to, and what looks to be an intense title fight. Tickets are on sale priced from £25 for adults, while children aged under 13 go free. For more information and to book, click here or call 0843 453 9000.
