Oulton Park hosts Bennetts BSB sizzling Showdown decider

Thursday, August 29 2019

Oulton Park hosts the crucial Bennetts British Superbike Championship Showdown decider this weekend (6-8 September), a thrilling triple-header race weekend when the top six riders who'll contest the 2019 title battle will be settled.

The Cheshire circuit will see the drama play out as riders fight for one of the three remaining places up for grabs. Last time out at Cadwell Park, Be Wiser Ducati teammates Scott Redding and Josh Brookes and Oxford Racing Ducati's Tommy Bridewell secured their spots in the Showdown, so expect plenty of on-track fireworks as the rest of the pack battle to be a contender.

With 75 points available across the weekend's three races, the stakes are high and a host of riders can still make the cut. Danny Buchan, Tarran Mackenzie and Andrew Irwin currently occupy the remaining Showdown spots, but will they keep their places when the final chequered flag falls on Sunday afternoon?

Buchan is feeling confident after winning the first race at Cadwell, and plans to push hard at Oulton to make the Showdown for the first time:

"I am going to treat Oulton Park like I have every race this season; I want to be on the podium again and we have made the bike stronger off the turns now. We also have had some improvements with the chassis which we tried during the test evening at Cadwell Park and they worked so hopefully that can make the bike better for Oulton Park too and that should be enough to secure me in, but Podium Points are so important at this stage.

"It would be massive for myself and the team to make the Showdown for the first time; even race wins are massive at this level. It is awesome as it shows what myself and the team are capable of together and they put a huge amount into our racing; we don't have a major title sponsor so there is a lot of effort behind the scenes. Every achievement is special and it is good to be able to repay them with these results as they have put a lot of faith in me over the last couple of seasons. To get in the Showdown would be good but then me being me, I will want to be top three in the championship - I want to be in the top three!"

Irwin, who currently sits sixth in the standings, was involved in a second lap tussle with Redding in race two at Cadwell Park that took both riders out. The Honda Racing rider was given two penalty points for contact causing a crash and will start at the back of the grid in the first race at Oulton Park - a set-back to his Showdown hopes. Both riders scored zero points in the race but Redding's tally was enough to take him through.

2015 champion Brookes proved dominant at Cadwell Park, with a runner-up spot in race one and a win in race two landing him the Monster 'King of the Mountain' trophy.  The 2015 champion is certain to be one of the favourite for this year's title, but Redding's first season in the Bennetts BSB Championship has included double and treble wins so he's still one to watch.

The weekend's track action features support races from the Pirelli National Superstock 600 and 1000 Championships and Dickies British Supersport Championship, plus heaps of off-track entertainment.

Rock bands The Quayz and Hollowpoint will perform in Chequers marquee on Friday and Saturdays evenings and a funfair and adventure playground will keep the kids amused. We'll also have a vast trade area selling official merchandise, bike parts and accessories and lots more!

Discounted adult weekend tickets are £39 until midday on Wednesay, with reductions for teens (13-15) and kids under 13 go free. Cut price race day tickets (Sunday) are also available online for £28 - see www.oultonpark.co.uk for full details.
