Can BTCC leader Josh Cook up more success at Donington?

Wednesday, April 24 2019

Current Kwik Fit BTCC championship leader Josh Cook heads to Donington Park fresh in the knowledge that the East Midlands venue is one of his happy hunting grounds.

The 27-year-old BTC Racing ace almost claimed a maiden touring car win at the circuit in 2015 in just his second race weekend, but eventually put his demons to rest at Donington last year with his breakthrough triumph.

He's not feeling the pressure ahead of the weekend though, as he's still getting to grips with the team's new Honda Civic FK8 car.

"At the minute, being championship leader doesn't really count for much - it's where you end up at the end of the season that's the important one," he commented.

"For me, heading to Donington with maximum ballast brings in another challenge. In the past few years I've always gone well at Donington and took my first win there last year which was obviously memorable for me. I don't feel like there's any pressure as championship leader, but we do have the added challenge of arriving with maximum ballast."

Cook is hoping that the combination of a new team and a potent new car can power him into the championship reckoning after coming close last year.

"Last year was my best year in touring cars. We were in the championship fight until the second to last round. I'm looking to build on what I did last year and of course I think that I'm in a really good car, I'm in a really good team and we've got the potential to do really well.

"Every circuit you go to, if you've had a good history there then it's one of your favourites, and I'm lucky enough that over the past few years, Donington has gone well for me. Every year I've raced there in touring cars I've been in the top six. It is one of the circuits where I've had my best results but I'm under no illusions, it's always tough and you can't expect to be at the front just because I have been in the past."
