Rea leads the way as WorldSBK gets underway at Donington Park

Friday, May 25 2018

Reigning World champion Jonathan Rea saved his best until last in the opening free practice session of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship at Donington Park, nudging his Kawasaki Racing team-mate Tom Sykes back to second place.

Sykes had been the rider to beat throughout most of the opening session in damp conditions but in the final minutes Rea set the best lap of free practice one to edge ahead.

It was a strong opening session for Frenchman Loris Baz who was another rider to improve in the closing stages, pushing Leon Camier back into fourth place with Leandro Mercado completing the top five.

Niccola Canepa held sixth place, pushing ahead of Aruba.it Racing Ducati's Marco Melandri, who split the Yamahas as Alex Lowes posted the eighth fastest time. PJ Jacobsen and Michael Ruben Rinaldi completed the top ten.
