Dutch delight: van der Mark claims first win at Donington Park

Saturday, May 26 2018

History was made at Donington Park today in the opening Motul FIM Superbike World Championship race when Michael van der Mark claimed his first WorldSBK race victory, giving the PATA Yamaha team a home round celebration ahead of tomorrow's second race.

The success didn't come easily for the Dutch rider though as he had a race long duel with the Kawasaki Racing team-mates Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes, with the pair trading blows throughout the race.

However van der Mark was biding his time and was able to capitalise by punching his way ahead and then holding off the Donington Park past race winners to score Yamaha their first victory in the Championship since 2011. However Rea and Sykes upheld the British honour to lock out the final two podium spots.

Alex Lowes was fourth on the second of the PATA Yamahas ahead of the Milwaukee Aprilia paring of Lorenzo Savadori and Eugene Laverty. Loris Baz was seventh fastest with Chaz Davies overcoming his crash yesterday to claim eighth just ahead of home hero Leon Haslam who edged ahead of Leon Camier on the Red Bull Honda to complete the top ten.
