Matt Neal leads Honda 1-2 in Brands Hatch BTCC test

Thursday, March 29 2018

Honda finished the second and final official Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship pre-season test day on top of the timesheets with a 1-2 for the brand new Civic Type R ahead of next weekend's (7/8 April) opening rounds of the 2018 season.

Triple Champion Matt Neal headed new teammate Dan Cammish by just over five hundredths of a second. Cammish, who will make his BTCC debut after dominating the Porsche Carrera Cup GB over the last three seasons, has been tipped to emulate Gordon Shedden, who he replaces in the team.

Eurotech's Jack Goff made it a 1-2-3 for the Japanese marque, lapping the Indy circuit just a tenth shy in the old Civic Type R. Fourth overall was 2017 runner-up Colin Turkington, with BMW teammate Andrew Jordan sixth. Sandwiching the pair was Motorbase's James Cole.

Local racer Mike Bushell was seventh as he gears up for his BTCC return with Team HARD, with AmD MG's Rory Butcher eighth. Ciceley's Adam Morgan and Speedworks' Tom Ingram completed the top ten.

The day's fastest times were set in the morning session, with rain setting in at lunchtime, meaning that the afternoon's times were over six seconds slower. Power Maxed TAG Racing's Josh Cook was quickest in the damp, heading an impressive James Cole and Rory Butcher. Cammish was the fastest Honda in fourth, whilst Sam Tordoff continued preparations for his BTCC comeback with fifth in the afternoon for Motorbase.

With just over a week until the opening rounds, teams have little time left to test, but with drivers free to run different setups and weights on their cars, the true picture will not be known until qualifying at Brands Hatch on Saturday 7 April.
