Brands Hatch race-winner Robin Frijns joins Audi DTM line-up

Monday, January 29 2018

Brands Hatch Blancpain GT race-winner Robin Frijns will join the DTM grid this year, making his return to the Kent circuit on 11/12 August.

Dutchman Frijns completed a clean sweep for Audi when the Blancpain GT Sprint Cup visited Brands Hatch in 2015, when he partnered Laurens Vanthoor in the series. He went on to claim the overall championship, adding this to his titles in Formula BMW, Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 3.5.

The 26-year-old, who has also been a Formula 1 test driver for Sauber and Caterham, replaces double DTM champion Matthias Ekström in Audi's DTM line-up. He'll drive an RS 5 alongside regulars Loïc Duval, Nico Müller, Mike Rockenfeller, reigning champion René Rast and Britain's Jamie Green as they defend Audi's drivers', manufacturers' and teams' titles.

In addition to his Blancpain success in works-backed Audi R8s, Frijns drove an Audi DTM race car in a junior driver evaluation in Spain in 2013.

Head of Audi Motorsport, Dieter Gass said: "Robin left a strong impression with us even back then and we haven't lost sight of him ever since. At the wheel of the Audi R8 LMS, he showed his abilities and is doing a very good job in our Formula E simulator as well. That it's possible to battle for the title in the DTM even as a rookie was demonstrated by René Rast last year. Robin has great potential and Audi is in a very good position in terms of its driver lineup for the 2018 DTM. We're convinced of this."

Tickets for DTM at Brands Hatch on 11/12 August are available from £30, or £18 for 13-15 year-olds with free entry for under-13s. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
