Blockbuster entry for Trucks and Fireworks this weekend at Brands

Thursday, November 02 2017

A huge entry of 31 trucks are set to compete for glory at this weekend's (4/5 November) British Truck Racing Championship (BTRC) rounds at Brands Hatch, which will climax with a spectacular 'big bang' fireworks display on Sunday evening.

The BTRC trucks are split into two divisions, with each one fielding a bumper grid of the 5-tonne, 1,000-horsepower machines, capable of duelling at up to 100mph. Each division is scheduled to race three times over the weekend, with a grand final combining both classes set to end the weekend's racing before the fireworks are released.

Heading up the 12 Division 1 trucks will be Ryan Smith, who is set to take his second consecutive title this weekend. His closest competitor in the standings is ten-time champion Stuart Oliver and the pair are set to continue their on-track rivalry on the Indy circuit.

The Division 1 entry also contains four-time champion Mat Summerfield, as well as former champions David Jenkins and Richard Collett. Other drivers set to make a big impression this weekend include multiple race-winner Shane Brereton, Dutch trucker Frans Smit, former Division 2 champion Simon Reid and Stuart Oliver's son Michael, who is in his second year of the sport.

A bumper grid of 19 Division 2 trucks is expected this weekend, and having secured the 2017 championship, Finland's Mika Makinen will be aiming to add to his considerable tally of wins. There is still a fierce battle for the runner-up position, which will be contested by local racers Tony Smith from Gravesend and Dartford's Simon Cole, plus outgoing champion Adam Bint.

Kent is very much the centre of Division 2 truck racing, and other truckers out to impress their home crowd include double Division 2 champion Steven Powell from nearby Wrotham Heath, and his brother John from Tonbridge. They'll be fighting for local bragging rights with Sevenoaks' James Aitkenhead, Lydd's married couple Wayne and Joanne Eason, and Maidstone's Andrew Fulcher.

The weekend also includes a huge off-track show, with a feast of family activities on main raceday Sunday including show truck displays, a funfair, Mini Monster Truck rides, YoungDrive experiences, go-karting, Red Dragon Monster Truck rides, Downforce Simulator, Terry Grant stunt shows, Star Wars characters and Dexter the Dinosaur. Younger visitors can learn circus skills, play with arts and crafts and a bubble station in the heated Big Top tent on the Sunday, and there's facepainting, bouncy castles, Diggerland and an adventure playground too.

The event will climax with a 'big bang' fireworks display at approx. 5pm on Sunday, and visitors can stay on to enjoy live music in the Big Top tent from local band Meltin' Joel and enjoy themed food and drink, whilst the fairground will remain open into the evening.

Tickets for Truck Racing and Fireworks at Brands Hatch on 4/5 November are available on the gate for £15 on Saturday and £25 on Sunday, with teen discounts and free entry for under-13s. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click  here.
