Superb entry for Historic Grand Prix races at Brands this weekend

Wednesday, June 29 2016

A fantastic selection of 22 late '50s and early '60s Formula One cars will take part in two races at the Legends of Brands Hatch Superprix on the world-famous Grand Prix circuit this weekend (1-3 July), recalling the pioneering period in which the F1 World Championship first graced the Kent venue.

Star cars will include machines from manufacturers such as Cooper, Brabham, BRM, and Lotus, all of which won the F1 World Championship during the rear-engined revolution of the '60s. There will even be an example of the Lotus 25, the specification of car in which Jim Clark took the first Grand Prix victory at Brands Hatch in 1964.

Nick Fennell will driver the Lotus 25, and line up on the grid alongside other cars from Colin Chapman's famous marque, including the oft forgotten Lotus 24 in Miles Griffiths hands, and Andrea Guarino's Lotus 18, similar to the machine driven to victories by Stirling Moss for the Rob Walker Racing Team. The Lotus contingent is completed by a Lotus 18/21, similar to the machines driven by Innes Ireland in 1961 - the season of Team Lotus's first victory.

Another notable addition to the grid is the BRM P57 of Charles McCabe, the car used by Graham Hill as he drove to the first of his two F1 World Championship crowns in 1962.

The first team to truly master the art of rear-engined car design was Cooper with its star driver Jack Brabham. A number of Coopers will be present on the grid, including examples of the T45 and the T51, the cars that propelled the Australian to two of his three World Championships.

Brabham later turned his attention to team ownership with his own eponymous outfit, becoming the only man to win the World Championship in a car bearing his own name in 1966. Two cars bearing the Brabham badge will appear on the grid too, recalling one of the sport's more unique manufacturers.

The grid is completed by Eddy Perk on board the lesser-known Heron F1 machine.
