Rare Lotus F1 car to demo run at Gold Cup on Bank Holiday Monday

Tuesday, August 23 2016

A rare 16-cylinder Lotus 43 originally entered for the 1966 Oulton Park Gold Cup will be demonstrated on track on Bank Holiday Monday (29 August).

Designed to take Team Lotus into Formula 1's 3-litre era, the Type 43 was built for the 1966 and 67 seasons whilst Team Lotus awaited the new Cosworth DFV engine. It used rival team BRM's H16 engine, effectively two 1.5-litre V8s joined together.

The Type 43 made a total of nine race starts, with Jim Clark first taking to the wheel at the Italian Grand Prix, and later claiming victory in the US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. This was the only win for the complex and unreliable, but glorious sounding H16 engine.

Before its transatlantic trip, the 43 was entered for the Oulton Park Gold Cup, but the engine blew in practice, so Clark used the older Coventry Climax-engined 33 instead, managing a podium place finish behind the all-conquering Jack Brabham and Denny Hulme.

The 43 returned for the 1967 season-opener at South Africa, but with the revolutionary Cosworth-powered 49 making a triumphant first appearance at Zandvoort, the two 43s were sold off to customers for use in Formula 5000 with Ford V8 engines.

The car being demonstrated this weekend is owned by Andy Middlehurst and is the result of a painstaking ten-year restoration that was completed in 2013. It will be on track during Monday's lunch break (from 12:45pm) and on display throughout the day in the Classic Team Lotus awning in the paddock.

Tickets for the Oulton Park Gold Cup are available in advance from £19, with free admission for under-13s. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or visitwww.oultonparkgoldcup.co.uk
