Kiyonari reigns in opening free practice

Saturday, August 24 2013

Samsung Honda's Ryuichi Kiyonari snatched the top spot in the final two minutes of the opening MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship free practice session as the triple champion edged out Josh Brookes in the closing stages.

Brookes onboard the Tyco Suzuki had been the pace-setter throughout the session but Kiyonari was closing with every lap and in the final moments he fired the Samsung Honda ahead to lead the opening session at his home circuit.

The second Samsung Honda of Alex Lowes had a steady start to the session, running tenth towards the final 15 minutes. However the Showdown contender set a lap in the final five minutes to move third fastest ahead of an improving Josh Waters. The double Australian Superbike champion had his best session of the season and was the fastest of the Milwaukee Yamaha riders in fourth with team-mate James Ellison in ninth.

Defending champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne was fifth fastest as he headed off his team-mate Keith Farmer in sixth after a strong start for the former Superstock champion. James Westmoreland on the first of the Buildbase BMW's moved ahead of PJ Jacobsen in the final minutes to move seventh whilst Tommy Bridewell on the Halsall Racing Kawasaki completed the top ten.
