Lewis Hamilton planning 21,000km round trip to Brands Hatch this weekend

Tuesday, March 29 2011

2008 Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton is planning to fly more than 21,000 kilometres this weekend (2/3 April) in order to support his younger brother Nicolas' debut in the AirAsia Renault Clio Cup at Brands Hatch.

The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver is currently in Australia, where he clinched a commanding podium in the opening F1 Grand Prix of the 2011 season, but the 26-year-old has told British reporters that he plans to fly back to the UK to cheer on his brother's first ever race.

"I am the closest person to him but even I cannot comprehend what it must have been like to have the difficulties he has had," commented Hamilton of his 19-year-old brother, who has cerebral palsy.

"I'm so proud of him. I'll just head back to see his qualifying and first race and then pop back out. It's cool - I will get to watch lots of movies on the plane!

Nicolas, who signed with the TCR team for the Renault Clio Cup after gaining his racing licence earlier this year, has already credited his brother as his main source of inspiration.

"I look up to Lewis a lot and have a massive amount of respect for him and the way he handles things," said Nicolas. "He's taken on board and got over a huge amount of pressure over the years."

The Renault Clio Cup will be supporting the opening round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch this weekend.

Qualifying for both series will take place on Saturday, with the first Clio Cup race being held on Saturday afternoon. Both categories will also be racing on Sunday.

Tickets for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship supported by the Renault Clio Cup this weekend (2/3 April) are available from £25 for adults, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click on the link below.
