Ex-Lotus F1 star Martin Donnelly praises the new Snetterton 300 circuit

Tuesday, June 28 2011

Former Lotus Formula One driver Martin Donnelly has praised the Snetterton 300 circuit and believes the newly configured layout provides drivers with more of a challenge.

The Irishman, who drove for the Lotus Formula One team in 1990, returned to race for the famous British manufacturer again, as he helped guide a factory backed Evora GT4 to victory in the Lotus Cup UK at the MSVR organised Lotus Festival last weekend.

Thousands of fans flocked to the circuit to witness demonstrations from iconic Lotus F1 machinery, alongside a superb line up of close racing.

The Norfolk circuit is held in high esteem by Donnelly, a resident in the county for 26 years, and he was mightily impressed with the new 2.99-mile layout after competing in his first race at the venue since its transformation. The newly configured Snetterton 300 venue was completed in February this year.

Donnelly said: "It was the first time I've raced the Snetterton 300 circuit but I had done several track days on the new track, but having been based in Norfolk for the last 26 years my opinion was if it is not broken why try and fix it. However, the proof is in the pudding and I've driven it in both the dry and the wet and I have to take my hat off to Mr Palmer, it has been money well invested and it is definitely a better circuit. I haven't heard anyone say a bad word about it. It's a long track but it is more challenging for the drivers.

"It was a good race and a good result for the team Lotus Motorsport. It was a special occasion for myself as it was my first official association with the Lotus brand out on track."

After thoroughly enjoying his racing return for Lotus, he hopes to turn a wheel in anger once again this season.

Donnelly added: "I would like to get back out in the Evora again. Motor racing is in my blood and if I was asked to go out and compete again for the factory or Lotus on Track, I would bite their hand off."

The next major event at the Snetterton 300 circuit is the British Superbike Championship this weekend.
