Charity ice skater takes on Brands Hatch challenge

Monday, January 31 2011

Brands Hatch is a familiar location for wheel-based activity, but on Saturday (January 29) it played host to a rather more unusual set of wheels, as charity fundraiser Teddy Keen visited the famous Kent venue on rollerblades to warm up for the 200km Kuopio Ice skating marathon in Finland.

Teddy will be taking part in the gruelling race on 20 February to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital and Headlines, both of whom have helped his younger brother, Angus, who suffers from Apert Syndrome.

Teddy spent half an hour on the challenging Indy circuit and in doing so became the third member of the Keen family to lap the track.

"Both my dad and step-dad have raced here. It was great to finally follow in their footsteps, albeit, at 1/10th of the pace. I narrowly missed the track record, but I can live with that!" Teddy joked.

However, Teddy's experience wasn't without incident.

"Coming round Paddock Hill Bend I soon realised the gradient was way beyond my skating skills. I tried slowing but it was too late. Down I went in true biker style, but instead of leathers all I had was lycra. Ouch!"

Nonetheless Teddy found the experience a useful exercise as part of his training for the big day.

"Training on the circuit was great practice for my 200km ice race challenge in Finland. I only hope their track is a bit flatter!

"It was a great day; many thanks to Brands Hatch for making it possible for me take over the track. The children at Great Ormond Street will really appreciate Brands Hatch giving me the chance to practice before my big day."

Teddy will take on the ice marathon on 20 February. To visit Teddy's website or make a donation visit www.teddyonice.com.
