BTCC QUALIFYING: Shedden storms to pole at Donington

Saturday, October 09 2021

Halfords Racing with Cataclean's triple champion Gordon Shedden claimed pole position in qualifying at Donington Park this afternoon, setting the fastest time in the 10 minute top-10 showdown segment.

Shedden's time of 1m08.994s was a new qualifying lap record at Donington, 0.004s under the previous benchmark.

Pole for Shedden is his first of the season, on his comeback year in the BTCC. The Scotsman was 0.033s clear of Power Maxed's Dan Lloyd, with fellow Vauxhall driver Jason Plato underlining the team's speed with the third quickest time.

Rory Butcher was fourth, just over a couple of tenths of a second away from the ultimate pace in Toyota Gazoo Racing Corolla, with Senna Proctor fifth in the BTC Racing Honda Civic.

Colin Turkington was the leading championship contender in sixth, 0.060s ahead of Shedden's teammate Daniel Rowbottom, with Chris Smiley eighth in the EXCELR8 Hyundai i30N.

Championship leader Ash Sutton, laden with maximum ballast, was ninth in the Laser Tools Infiniti Q50, with Josh Cook taking 10th for BTC Racing.

FP1 pace setter Adam Morgan was the first of the drivers to miss out on the top-ten showdown segment, having lapped just 0.037s slower than Plato who was the final driver inside the top-10 of the first part of qualifying. Title contenders Tom Ingram and Jake Hill were also eliminated, and will start race one tomorrow from 12th and 13th respectively.
