Watch: Johnny Herbert's Brands Hatch F1 return

Tuesday, January 12 2021

Former F1 driver Johnny Herbert returned to competitive race action in a Grand Prix car at Brands Hatch last year for the Masters Historic Festival for a Sky F1 feature, which you can now watch in full on our official Facebook page.

The final feature features onboard race footage of Herbert driving around the Kent circuit's full Grand Prix layout, behind the wheel of an Ensign N180B, as part of an excersise in ground effect research put together by former F1 deputy team principal Bob Fernley and the Univeristy of Bolton.

The car was prepared by students at the univeristy's National Centre for Motorsport Engineering, who readied the machine for a test programme as well as the two races at Brands Hatch. Herbert qualified fourth before finishing the first of the weekend's two races in fifth position.

Herbert returned to the venue where he won the Formula Ford Festival in 1985 to race alongside a field of other iconic cars from the sport's fondly remembered DFV era of the '70s and '80s, including a McLaren MP4/1, and a six-wheeled Tyrrell P34.

This year's Masters Historic Festival is scheduled for 29/30 May.
