New “Rule of Six” to have minimal effect on MSV race events

Thursday, September 17 2020

As you may be aware, new legislation came into force earlier this week (Monday 14 September) to prohibit social gatherings of more than six people - the so-called "rule of six".

Venues following COVID-19 secure guidelines, such as MSV's race circuits, can still host larger numbers in total. But there must not be individual groups larger than six, and groups must not mix socially or form larger groups.

To clarify, all our remaining scheduled events are going ahead as planned, with limited attendances and in full compliance with COVID-19 secure guidelines (other than Oulton Park BSB this weekend). The only additional change is that you will not be able to attend any of these events in a group of more than six people, unless you all live together or are in the same support bubble.

We do ask that all race event spectators adhere strictly to these new rules. The police have the authority to close venues that are breaking them, and fines will be in place for venues who are not complying.

What measures are MSV taking to keep spectators safe?

We have implemented a range of safety measures in accordance with COVID-Secure guidelines. These include significantly limited ticket sales, enhanced cleaning, restricted public access to the pit/paddock areas and a host of measures to support social distancing.

Are spectators able to attend BSB and BTCC events from 1 October?

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) have classified BTCC and Bennetts BSB events as 'elite' sport' due to their status as the leading championships of their kind in the UK. Under present rules, spectators cannot attend those events; however the government announced in July that fans would be allowed to return from 1 October, with social distancing.

That position is currently being reviewed in light of the recent increase in positive COVID-19 tests in the UK. The Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has stated that no firm decision has yet been made - only that details of changes will be announced soon. It may be, for example, that spectator numbers are capped to a lower amount than originally anticipated. If this has any impact on the remaining 2020 Bennetts BSB and BTCC rounds on MSV circuits, we will communicate an update as soon as information is available.

We had intended to run this weekend's Bennetts BSB round at Oulton Park as a 'pilot' test event ahead of the 1 October resumption; unfortunately that was ruled out when the pilot programme was revised following a statement from the Prime Minister last week.
