Monday, March 02 2020

The 2020 Motul FIM Superbike World Championship is already shaping up to be an absolute thriller ahead of its visit to Donington Park on 3-5 July, after three different riders won at the championship's season opener in Australia, whilst reigning Bennetts British Superbike Champion Scott Redding claimed a triple podium.

Kawasaki's Brits Alex Lowes and Jonathan Rea shared the winners circle with Turkey's Toprak Razgatlıoğlu on an open weekend in which the top-two were separated by less than a tenth-of-a-second in all three races.

Lowes's victory in the final race of the weekend, allied with a second place and a fourth was enough to give him an early championship lead from series newcomer Redding who impressed on debut to claim third place in all three races.

Razgatlıoğlu and Rea sit third and fourth in the standings after enjoying a win and a second place apiece in addition to a retirement.

With Kawasaki, Ducati and Yamaha all on the podium across the opening weekend, early signs are that visitors to July's Donington Park spectacular will be treated to the closest UK round of international superbike racing in many a year.

Chaz Davies fared next best of the Brits with a best finish of fifth place on his Ducati, whilst Leon Haslam and Tom Sykes got their new seasons under way with top-ten performances too.
