Turkington surges to fifth BTCC win of 2019 at Snetterton

Sunday, August 04 2019

Reigning Kwik Fit British Touring Car Champion, and current series leader, Colin Turkington stormed to his fifth win of the 2019 season behind the wheel of his Team BMW 330i M Sport in the second race of the day at Snetterton this afternoon (Sunday).

Race one winner Tom Ingram launched into an early lead from pole position in the grid's sole factory backed Toyota Corolla, but Turkington was the man on the move at the start, rocketing from fourth on the grid to second.

Dan Cammish intially occupied third, with Andrew Jordan in the BMW Pirtek Racing liveried 330i M Sport right on his tail in fourth. Jordan moved past Cammish on at the Wilson hairpin on the third lap, whilst Turkington continued to apply pressure on Ingram.

Despite Turkington's obvious pace advantage over the Toyota, he was unable to find anywhere to make a move throughout the race's opening six laps. By the half way stage, Ingram still held the lead, but a sizeable queue had formed behind him with Turkington, Jordan and Cammish followed by Ollie Jackson (Ford Focus RS), Sam Tordoff (Honda Civic Type R), Jason Plato (Vauxhall Astra), Matt Simpson (Honda Civic Type R), and Jake Hill (Audi S3).

Ingram and Turkington ran nose-to-tail into Wilson on the seventh lap, but it was Jordan who moved first by swinging to the outside. Ingram suddenly found himself betwixt a pair of BMW 3 Series with Turkington nosing up the inside into the lead. Cammish followed him past into second, whilst Jordan managed to maintain his third position.

Ingram nosedived down the order from there to an eventual 23rd place finish, whilst Turkington imperiously pulled away at he front to secure his 51st win in the BTCC.

Cammish resisted lap after lap of intense harrying from Jordan to hold onto second place, with the latter's third position securing a 200th podium with BMW machinery for the West Surrey Racing team.

Ollie Jackson held onto a hard earned fourth place in his Team Shredded Wheat with Gallagher machine to secure his best result of the season, whilst Tordoff completed the top-five.

Jason Plato finished sixth for a second race in succession, just ahead of the hard charging Ashley Sutton (Subaru Levorg) and Chris Smiley (Honda Civic Type R) who both moved up the field in the closing laps. Smiley's reward for his efforts was to be drawn as the pole-sitter for the partial reverse grid finale later this afternoon.

Simpson and Hill completed the top-10 at the end of 12 hard fought laps on the 2.97-mile 300 circuit.
