Hill steals it from Kiyo by 0.019 seconds!

Sunday, August 29 2010

Tommy Hill topped the final free practice session at Cadwell Park this morning as the conditions continued to change; the Worx Crescent Suzuki rider left it until the final lap of the session to topple Ryuichi Kiyonari by just 0.019 seconds ahead of this afternoon's Swan Combi Roll for Pole qualifying shootout.

Hill said: "I am happy enough with that session. We've had a few problems with set-up for the wet but we made a few tweaks and everything is feeling fine now. It was very wet out there but it is always good to come out on top of a session. We are all set now for both wet and dry conditions and I am feeling good and ready for qualifying."

Steve Brogan took advantage of the wet conditions towards the beginning of the session as the Mirror.co.uk BSB - Evo title contender put the Jentin Racing-BMW fastest ahead of Tommy Hill and Ryuichi Kiyonari. Brogan's spell at the top was short lived though as the Worx Crescent Suzuki went ahead just five minutes later as Brogie dropped to third before rounding out the session in seventh.

Kiyonari then edged ahead of title rival Hill with just over 20 minutes remaining of the session, putting the HM Plant Honda back to the top of the times, whilst Michael Rutter elevated himself up from outside the top 20 to second on the Ridersmotorcycles.com Ducati. The Blade though just missed out on the top ten as he got nudged to eleventh in the closing stages.

Hill was improving his pace at the top of the timesheets; he put in his fastest lap with just over ten minutes remaining to edge further ahead of Kiyonari, but the Japanese ace was ready to strike back and he went fastest by 0.182s with five minutes to go. However Hill still had something in reserve and as the chequered flag went out he was on his fastest lap of the session; he maintained his pace to move back ahead of Kiyo who ended second fastest.

Simon Andrews had moved up to second before Kiyo's improvement as the MSS Colchester Kawasaki rider ran third in the closing stages but he was relegated to fourth as James Ellison moved up from fifth to third on the Swan Honda in the final minute. The second Swan Honda of Stuart Easton could only end the final practice in 18th.

Alastair Seeley was the fastest of the riders seeking the final Tighter Fighter spot for Relentless Suzuki in fifth ahead of team-mate Michael Laverty and Brogan who remained inside the top ten with Dan Linfoot in eighth.

Chris Walker put in a lap to finish inside the top ten in ninth ahead of Yukio Kagayama who dropped down the order in the closing stages after a crash at Hall Bends with ten minutes remaining which ruled him out for the remainder of the session.

HM Plant Honda's Josh Brookes, who had set the pace yesterday, was 15th fastest ahead of qualifying.
