Record breaking Goff claims pole for Snetterton BTCC opener

Saturday, July 28 2018

Honda driver Jack Goff stormed to a record breaking time at Snetterton this afternoon to claim pole position for the opening BTCC race of the weekend tomorrow morning.

The WIX Racing with Eurotech man set a time of 1m55.556s with six minutes remaining in the session to break the previous BTCC qualifying lap record at Snetterton, set in 2016 by Gordon Shedden.

Halfords Yuasa Racing driver Dan Cammish, who had topped the times for much of the second half of the session, had to settle for second place, just 0.074s off the pace.

Matt Simpson's Honda Civic held second briefly before Goff's lap, and will start from third place alongside another Brett Smith, who made it three Eurotech-prepared cars in the top four, and four Honda cars on the front two rows.

Championship challenger Tom Ingram recovered from electrical issues in practice to claim fifth on the grid ahead of Vauxhall driver Josh Cook.

Rob Austin's Alfa Romeo Giulietta will line-up in seventh place, 0.053s ahead of Sam Tordoff's special pink liveried Ford Focus, while reigning champion Ash Sutton will start ninth in his Subaru Levorg after improving late on. Sutton was just 0.006s ahead of Mercedes man Tom Oliphant, who completed the top-10.

Former champions Andrew Jordan, Matt Neal, Colin Turkington and Jason Plato each had difficult sessions, qualifying in 11th, 12th, 15th and 25th respectively, with Neal suffering an off-track moment at Coram into Murrays with a few minutes left in the session.

The first race of the weekend starts at 11.30 tomorrow morning.

Goff commented: "We made a 50/50 call and the car actually wasn't as good as in FP2, but the team has all the cars inside the top-five so it's a testament to the WIX Racing with Eurotech guys. It's not too bad to get the lap record too after just missing out last year, and I'm chuffed. I left nothing on the table and gave it everything."

The BTCC drivers are back on track again this afternoon for the qualifying session for the Diamond Double race. All cars will run without ballast, and with Goff's time set with 27kgs of ballast onboard, could well improve on his already record-breaking pace. The session starts at 17.40.
