Donington's WorldSBK launched with traditional British cuppa

Thursday, May 24 2018

Donington Park laid on a traditional British afternoon tea this afternoon for the launch of the only UK round of the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship, which takes place this weekend (25-27 May) at the Leicestershire circuit.

Championship leader and triple champion Jonathan Rea was joined by fellow Brit riders Tom Sykes and Alex Lowes for the event in Garage 39, Donington Park's new restaurant, where they were interviewed by Eurosport WorldSBK presenter Matt Roberts.

Rea, who is aiming to break Carl Fogarty's win record this weekend, admitted the circuit hadn't always been kind to him and complimented Sykes on his previous performances at Donington Park. Sykes is currently third in the standings behind another Brit, Chaz Davies.

Meanwhile Alex Lowes, who is seventh in the championship, said: "I'm looking forward to a good weekend at my home race, we have been building as a team and I'm ready for the challenge."

All three enjoyed traditional tea, sandwiches and scones along with Bennetts British Superbike Championship wildcard riders Leon Haslam, Bradley Ray and Gino Rea, who join the World SBK championship for the UK round.

It's 'Pocket Rocket' Haslam's local circuit and he will be looking to repeat last year's success, which saw him on the podium for race one of the weekend.

The event promises a thrilling weekend of racing with support from World Supersport, World Supersport 300 and Superstock 1000 plus the excitment of the live Paddock Show.

Adult gate prices for the event are £15 for tomorrow's practice, £35 for Saturday and £45 for Sunday with reductions for teens (13-15). Kids under 13 go FREE - for full details click here.
