Local hero Haslam on top ahead of opening race

Saturday, March 31 2018

Local hero Leon Haslam goes into tomorrow's opening Bennetts British Superbike Championship race in confident mood after topping the timings in today's second free practice. Haslam - who earlier in the day officially opened Donington Park's new restaurant - pushed ahead in the final five minutes to register the fastest time of the afternoon session.

Reigning champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne topped the timings in the first practice of the day in wetter conditions in the morning, so expect last season's rivarly between the pair to be fiercer than ever when things gets underway tomorrow.

Shakey beat Haslam to the title on the last day of the 2017 season, stealing the crown after Haslam crashed out at Brands Hatch in a dramatic final race after going into the weekend with a 34-point lead.

He took time out of his busy schedule today to cut the ribbon at Garage 39, Donington Park's fantastic new restaurant, joined by MotorSport Vision Chief Executive Jonathan Palmer and circuit Manager Chris York. It's the first major new restaurant to be opened at an MSV venue and also features a cafe and bar.

Tomorrow's BSB track action gets underway with Free Practice 3 at 10.50 followed by qualifying at 11.30. The first headline BSB race takes place tomorrow (Sunday) at 16.30 instead of Monday - the weekend's racing has been rescheduled and an updated timetable can be seen  here.

Adult tickets are £16 on the gate tomorrow and £28 on Monday (reduced from £34). Anyone with tickets for Monday can also use them for admission tomorrow. And don't forget under 13s go FREE!
