The top ten MSV news stories of 2017

Friday, December 22 2017

It's been a busy 2017 for many, and the motorsport world is no exception. Here are the 10 most-read stories across the MotorSport Vision websites this year.

1. MSV Acquires Donington Park

No surprises that the most-read story of the year was MSV's acquisition of the Donington Park business last January. The news that the Competition and Markets Authority had cleared the takeover in August also spread far and wide. An extensive programme of improvements is now being carried out at the East Midlands venue ahead of a busy 2018 season.

2. Billy Monger gets back behind the wheel of a racing car at Brands Hatch

Billy Monger's rehabilitation from a life-changing accident in April has been one of the most inspirational stories of the year, so when he returned to the cockpit at Brands Hatch in July, our exclusive interview and photos proved to be highly popular. Extracts made the BBC online news and national press too.

3. Winter improvements

Venue improvements were carried out at Brands Hatch, Oulton Park and Snetterton last winter and many of you were eager to find out what these would be. The most extensive were at Oulton Park, with new spectating opportunities created as well as safer run-off zones for drivers and riders.

4. April Fools' Day stories

Two of our most outlandish April Fools' Day stories reported that Cadwell Park's famous Mountain would be flattened in the name of health and safety, and that Snetterton would be transformed into a street circuit. The latter was an ambitious project, with a satellite city for Norwich built around the 300 loop, complete with skyscrapers!

5. Trucks and Fireworks evening entertainment

With our Trucks and Fireworks event at Brands Hatch growing every year, 2017 included evening entertainment for the first time. Once the 'big bang' fireworks display had concluded, visitors could enjoy live music in the heated big top tent, consume themed food and drink, whilst the funfair stayed open for much of the evening.

6. Guy Martin heads inaugural Moto Time Attack entries

When truck mechanic, superbike racer and TV have-a-go-hero Guy Martin entered the inaugural Moto Time Attack event at Cadwell Park - his local circuit - it raised the profile of the summer event. Based on the tried-and-tested Time Attack sprint series for modified cars, Moto Time Attack got off to a successful start, even if Guy's bike wasn't to be on the ultimate pace.

7. New Circuit Manager appointments

Just before the start of the events season, both Oulton Park and Cadwell Park gained new Circuit Managers, with John Rush moving from the Lincolnshire track to the Cheshire venue, and Paul Woodford joining the MSV team. Both are now firmly established and getting ready for a second season of high octane action in 2018.

8. Deutsche Fest to debut at Brands Hatch

The newest addition to MSV's nation-themed festivals at Brands Hatch, Deutsche Fest joined American SpeedFest and Festival Italia in the 2017 line-up. A mixture of racing featuring German cars, track sessions, displays, off-track entertainment and an Oktober Fest-style beer tent provided plenty of weekend fun last August.

9. TCR UK Series debuts at Brands Hatch group test

New for 2018, TCR UK is a tin-top racing series employing regulations that have already provided cost-effective racing and manufacturer involvement from Alfa Romeo, Audi, Honda, Hyundai, Seat and VW. The first group test for the cars gave the opportunity for drivers and motorsport fans to see what the new series will be about when it gets underway next season.

10. Kent driver grabs title at Brands Hatch for most wins ever

West Kingsdown racer Rod Birley won his 600th race early in 2017, and by November he'd broken a 13-year record set by cult hero Gerry Marshall for the most wins in UK racing. All the more remarkable is that he achieved this benchmark despite sustaining injuries in a high-speed crash just two weeks earlier.
