Snetterton to reel back the years with Vintage Festival

Thursday, September 07 2017

Snetterton circuit will step back in time with retro entertainment on and off the track when the popular Vintage Festival returns on Sunday 17 September. This will be the final headline race event of a hugely busy season at the Norfolk circuit and a great opportunity for guests to let their hair down and unwind with the sights, tastes, and sounds of yesteryear.

On-track action will be headlined by the Vintage Sports-Car Club's (VSCC) Formula Vintage racing division, with races for cars from a bygone era of ingenuity. Visitors can marvel at cars of different shapes and sizes, many of which will showcase many unique engineering solutions from a period of pioneering and rapid development.

The cars will come from several different periods, with everything from striking creations of the Edwardian era through to machines from the inter-war and immediate post-war years. There will even be action from Grand Prix cars built up to 1961, bringing things a little closer to the advent of the traditional racing car and the emergence of Snetterton as a sporting venue.

The cars in action at the event will offer an authentic glimpse into the sport's past as they are run in a specification representative of the age. This extends to the safety features on the cars too - they mostly run without modern seatbelts or roll cages, so the competitors have to be truly brave to achieve the fastest lap times.

Many of the cars also have fascinating stories behind them, with interesting period competition histories. Much of the machinery on-site would have contested early editions of the Le Mans 24 Hours or Italy's classic Mille Miglia race, whilst others will have appeared at Brooklands during the formative years of racing in the UK. Guests can take a closer look at these cars in the paddock which is free to enter for all spectators.

This event will also be the VSCC's final competitive event of the year, so many of the drivers will be geared up for one last battle of the season in the Seaman Memorial Trophies, named in honour of pre-war British Grand Prix ace Richard Seaman.

There will be plenty of retro delights off the track too, including car displays from a wealth of road going classics covering many decades. Star models to look out for include early Ford models, a Lincoln Zephyr Coupe, and an AC Ace from 1955.

In addition, visitors can enjoy period music on a bandstand including Georgia & The Vintage Youth and the Swing Noir band, and indulge in late summer refreshments in the Pimm's and cream tea tent.

Adult tickets are available in advance for just £16 or £20 on the gate with free entry for under-13s. For more information, call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
