Shakey ready to strike as MCE BSB showdown kicks off

Thursday, September 14 2017

Shane 'Shakey' Byrne heads the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship standings ahead of Oulton Park this weekend (September 15/16/17) and as the Showdown opener beckons, the defending champion holds a narrow six point lead.

Byrne scored a single Podium Point with a third place last weekend at Silverstone and has finished only two of the last six races, but the five-time champion scored his first victory of the season at the Cheshire circuit back in May and is ready to come out fighting to try and extend his advantage.

Byrne said: "It has been a difficult year for everybody; you only have to look at how long it took for all of us to get into the Showdown. I have had a round off and everyone has missed races and that hurts in the points. I have been into the Showdown both ways; up and down on points before, and one year in particular we had the biggest advantage and I crashed and then it had gone. I am conscious of that fact.

"Clearly Silverstone last weekend never went to plan for my side of the garage, there was the possibility of 15 more Podium Points and we ended up with just one. That said there were plenty of positives for me too which I certainly plan on taking into the Showdown starting this weekend. We had a win and a second at Oulton Park earlier this year so the aim is obvious, to go one better and do the double.

"I am looking forward to Oulton Park as we had a good round there earlier in the season and far better than we did last year with the Be Wiser Ducati so hopefully if we can get a first and a second like we did in May or try for another double then we can keep pushing on."

Tickets for the MCE British Superbike Championship at Oulton Park are available on the gate from £10 with free entry for under-13s. For more information, please call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
