Rea equals Fogarty record with double Imola WorldSBK victory

Monday, May 14 2018

Reigning triple champion Jonathan Rea set the stage perfectly for this month's World Superbike Championship visit to Donington Park with a double win at Imola at the weekend, equalling Carl Fogarty's win record.  Victory at the Leicestershire circuit in two weeks' time (25-27 May) will secure him the outright record in front of his home crowd.

Rea showed his class with a dominant victory in race one at Imola ahead of teammate Tom Sykes and Ducati's Marco Melandri. He then equalled Fogarty's historic landmark with his second win of the weekend on Sunday. Fogarty's record had stood for almost 20 years,

Rea's record-equalling win was certainly more hard-fought than his race one victory, going wheel-to-wheel with Chaz Davies for several laps before making a decisive pass stick on lap 13. Rea's double triumph extends his championship lead, with British riders filling the top-three places heading to Donington Park.

Elsewhere, Donington-local Leon Haslam made his first wildcard appearance of the year on a specially liveried Pucetti Kawasaki, and secured a top-10 finish in the opening race.

Meanwhile, Ana Carrasco made history during the event, becoming the first female to take a pole position in a World Championship round, and with victory (her second in World Supersport 300) became the first female to lead a World Championship. She scored a top-10 finish in the same category at Donington last year, so should be one to watch this time around!

The UK round of World Superbikes at Donington Park takes place on 25-27 May, with advance tickets still available and offering savings compared to the gate prices. Tickets start from £28 with discounted rates for teenagers aged 13-15 and free entry for children aged 12 and under. Click  here to book or for more information.
