Oulton Park set for crucial MCE BSB championship battle

Tuesday, September 12 2017

Cheshire's Oulton Park is gearing up for one of the biggest events of the season as it hosts the crucial opening round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship Showdown this weekend (September 15/16/17).

The opening nine rounds have seen an incredible 14 different podium finishers, but only the top six riders now have the chance to become 2017 champion. The picturesque Cheshire circuit hosts the first of the final three rounds to decide who will lift the trophy this year.

Tens of thousands of fans will descend on the Oulton Park during the three-day event as record-breaking Shane 'Shakey' Byrne bids to defend his crown and add an incredible sixth title. However just six points separate him from arch rival Leon Haslam and the pair shared the victories at the circuit back in May.

2015 champion Josh Brookes is gunning to bring down the opposition though and he trails Byrne by just 10 points, with a maximum of 50 available from the two races this weekend. 21-year-old Jake Dixon secured his place as the youngest-ever rider in the title fight and he is ready to take on the established contenders, with Peter Hickman and Jason O'Halloran also ready to battle all the way to the finish.

Championship leader Byrne said: "We couldn't aim for anything less than a Showdown position, but it has been a difficult year for everybody. You only have to look at how long it took for all six riders to get into the Showdown. I have had a round off through injury and that hurts in the points.

"I am looking forward to Oulton Park as we had a good round there earlier in the year and far better than we did in 2016 with the Be Wiser Ducati so hopefully if we can get a first and a second like we did in May, or try for another double win, then we can keep pushing on. I am feeling quite relaxed and ready for the Showdown."

The Superbike class also features some local contenders including Stockport's Christian Iddon, who currently is fighting for the Riders Cup against race winners Luke Mossey and James Ellison, who rides for the Blackpool-based McAMS Yamaha team.

The event also includes supporting action from Dickies British Supersport, Pirelli National Superstock and Hel Performance British Motostar. Meanwhile fans can take part in a free pitwalk and autograph session on Sunday morning and off-track entertainment includes a trade village, funfair and children's palyground.

Tickets for the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship at Oulton Park on 15-17 September are available in advance from £27 until midday Wednesday 13 September, and thereafter on the gate for £10 on Friday, £15 on Saturday and £34 on Sunday, with free entry for under-13s.
