GB3 Qualifying: Champion elect O'Sullivan on pole

Saturday, October 16 2021

Carlin's Zak O'Sullivan claimed pole position for the opening GB3 Championship in association with the BRDC race at Donington Park, and secured the Jack Cavill Pole Position Cup for the driver with the most poles this season.

O'Sullivan's time of 1m24.176s was enough to put him 0.033s ahead of Hitech's Bart Horsten who qualified second. O'Sullivan's fifth pole of the year means he will be awarded the £1,000 prize and a trophy at the end of the weekend.

Horsten's teammate Reece Ushijima will start third on the grid for race one, but will line up on pole for race two, with that particular grid decided by each driver's second fastest times. The top-three in qualifying were separated by just over half a tenth of a second, with O'Sullivan's time being a new qualifying lap record for these cars.

All three drivers had periods at the top of the times, but O'Sullivan just grabbed it before the red flags came out with a minute and a half remaining with Reema Juffali's Douglas Motorsport car stranded in the gravel.

Sebastian Alvarez ensured all Hitech GP cars were within the top-four, with Roman Bilinski (Arden) and Christian Mansell (Carlin) completing the top-six.

Fortec's Roberto Faria was seventh, 0.045s behind Mansell and 0.003s ahead of Chris Dittmann Racing's Ayrton Simmons in eighth, and only 0.320s away from the overall pace.

Elite's Tom Lebbon and CDR's Branden Oxley completed a top-10 covered by just a fraction over half a second.

Newcomers James Hedley (Elite), Flynn Jackes (Hillspeed) and Eduardo Coseteng (Fortec) were 11th, 16th and 17th respectively. Impressively, the top-18 cars were covered by just over a second, with 1.7 seconds covering the entire field.

On the race two grid, based on each driver's second fastest laps, Ushijima and Horsten will start from an all-Hitech front-row, with O'Sullivan third ahead of Alvarez.

Bilinski and Mansell are next up ahead of Simmons, Faria, Lebbon and Oxley.
