Family matters at Brands Hatch Deutsche Fest

Sunday, July 07 2019

Brands Hatch enjoyed an especially family-orientated Deutsche Fest on and off the Indy circuit this afternoon, with household bragging rights at stake on the circuit, an exciting announcement on the podium, and lots of fun off the track.

Mark McAleer claimed the top honours in the day's centrepiece Porsche Club Championship race, narrowly eding out his son Jake McAleer by less than half-a-second, following a race-long batle in his Porsche 997. The duo battled throughout the race, which was preceded by a public grid walk, at the head of a five-car scrap for the lead in which Peter Morris came home third.

Whilst revelers took a stroll up the grid to take a closer look at the cars there was another family matter to be resolved for Toyo Tires Racing Saloons BMW racer Sam Strong, from nearby West Kingsdown.

Strong and his partner Frankie took to the podium with mystery coloured flares to discover the gender of their upcoming baby in front of their friends, family and rivals. The cascade of pink smoke that emerged told us that the baby would be a girl amidst much cheering on the grid - congratulations guys!

Back in the second Porsche Club Championship race of the day, Jake McAleer claimed a win of his own, his first outright in the championship as father Mark finished third. Chris Dyer claimed second.

As ever with one of Brands Hatch's themed festivals, Deutsche Fest was much more than just a race event, with loads to see and do including car displays, drift rides, dyno tests, and go karting. The Bavarian Biergarten was a highlight too with crowds soaking up the atmosphere and listening to oompah band music with a German beer in hand.

Other on-track action included high powered single-seater demonstrations, plus the Classic Restoracing Championship for Porsche Boxters. These stunning Boxters are prepared in classic Porsche racing liveries, evoking memories of the Porsche 917, 956, and 935.

The Deutsche Fest 2019 racing line-up was completed by the Toyo Tires Racing Saloons and Toyo Tires Production BMW Championship, for which prize steins were awarded, plus the Z Cars championship for BMW roadsters.
