Redding roars to race one pole at Donington

Saturday, October 05 2019

Bennetts British Superbike Championship leader Scott Redding kept up the pressure on his Showdown rivals with a fastest lap at Donington Park in qualifying this afternoon, putting him on pole for tomorrow's first race as momentum builds to the season finale.

Redding and his Be Wiser Ducati teammate Josh Brookes occupy the top two spots in the standings and traded places in practice and qualifying. Brookes was fastest in morning practice, beating Redding by 0.387s, before the former MotoGP rider turned the tables and recorded the fastest lap by 0.429s over Brookes in the third qualifying session (Q3).

Redding, who is aiming to win the title in his first season before switching the Superbike World Championship for 2020, said: "The Q3 was quite good, I had to really push quite hard because Q1 and 2 I didn't feel that great with the bike and the grip, and I didn't want to change too much because I know the base is not bad.

"Josh was stepping up the pace so I thought inside of me I have got more, so in the Q3 we just made a small little change and I kept working away at the lap time and I thought now I've just got to do what I really can do and put it on the line, and to get the pole position lap is obviously really good and sets us up for the race tomorrow."

Buildbase Suzuki's Bradley Ray, who delivered a clean sweep at the East Midlands circuit in the opening round last year, was third in qualifying and joins Redding and Brookes on the front row of the grid.

Showdown contenders Tommy Bridewell and Peter Hickman made it through to Q3, finishing seventh and eighth to line up on the third row of the grid tomorrow, while Tarran Mackenzie was edged out by brother Taylor in Q2 and will start in 10th. The last of the six Showdown title fighters, Danny Buchan, suffered handling issues with his bike and will start in 13th tomorrow.
