BTCC R1: Cook wins at Brands Hatch, Sutton extends standings lead

Sunday, October 24 2021

Josh Cook won the opening race of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship finale on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit this afternoon, heading home BTC Racing teammate Senna Proctor for a one-two, whilst Ashley Sutton extended his advantage in the standings with just two races remaining.

Cook controlled the race throughout, after taking the lead early on from pole-sitting teammate Proctor. A safety car period following an incident for Andy Neate at Druids briefly brought the pack back together, but Cook made agood restart to ensure he held position until the chequered flag.

Proctor was able act as a buffer between Cook and the rest of the pack in his Honda Civic Type R, and his solid performance from second was enough to keep Gordon Shedden's similar machine at bay. This was despite Shedden displaying threatening pace throughout 17 tours of the Kent circuit's longer layout, including setting fastest lap of the race.

Behind that, the order remained largely settled all race long. Daniel Lloyd's Vauxhall Astra ran fourth throughout, one place ahead of Daniel Rowbottom who completed the top-five.

Ahead of the race, five drivers remained in contention for the title. But that was reduced to just two, following Sutton's sixth place finish in his Laser Tools Racing Infinti Q50. Sutton finshed one place ahead of four-time champion Colin Turkington, with the latter unable to do anything to pass his title rival.

Turkington does however remain Sutton's only rival for the crown, albeit requiring a significant 33-point turnaround across the remaining two races. Cook was always an outsider coming into the weekend, whilst Tom Ingram and Jake Hill drop out of the race after finishing 12th and 13th respectively.
