Top step of the podium for truckers Powell and Smith

Saturday, November 02 2019

The British Truck Racing Association (BTRA) headlined today's action providing plenty of thrills and spills for a total of three races, and there will be plenty more action tomorrow with a busy racing timetable and an exciting off-track line-up of fun to match.

The Divison 2 behemoths were first to take to the track for a 15-minute dash to the flag with local driver Steven Powell producing a sensational lights-to-flag win. Starting from pole position Powell powered into Paddock Hill Bend defending from a hard charging John Bowler, meanwhile a hard charging Luke Garrett slipped into second ahead of DAF wheelman John Bowler.

It was ex-Renault Clio Cup champion Paul Rivett who took much of the limelight as he hunted down Adam Bint in the grid's only Volvo, with as little as only half a second splitting the duo for much of the race. Taking the inside line at Paddock Hill Bend saw Rivett slip past and into fourth place, with Bint rounding out the top five.

Ryan Smith claimed his 19th race win of the year today after a dominant performance in the day's Division 1 race. Starting the contest from pole position Smith drove clear of the pack with Jamie Anderson taking second place from ten-time champion Stuart Oliver. Further disaster struck for the series' stalwart with a mistake at Druids dropping the MAN driver further down the order to sixth position.

Faultless driving from Smith saw a series of fastest laps with the multiple champion distancing himself from the rest of the pack, going on to take the chequered flag followed by Jamie Anderson and David Jenkins with MAN machinery locking out the podium. Simon Reid took fourth while Stuart Oliver fought his way back to fifth.

The day's action concluded with another trip to the top step of the podium for local driver Steven Powell after battling his way through the second Division 2 race of the day. Running three wide into Paddock Hill Bend saw sixth place starter John Bowler make his way into first in just the opening lap of the race, with Steven Powell hot on the tail of the leading DAF machine.

Powell proved to be too much with a stunning chase regaining the lead of race two laps later, before a red flag was flown after Simon Cole ran wide and fell victim to the Paddock Hill gravel trap.

With Cole's Mercedes rescued from the gravel trap the race restarted with drivers taking on a five-minute dash to the chequered flag with Powell remaining unchallenged. Luke Garrett crossed the line in second just 0.9 seconds behind, followed by Rivett locking out the top three. Bowler was next to cross the line followed by Bint completing the top five positions.

The BTRA is back at Brands Hatch tomorrow bringing a total of five heavyweight headline races, plus support action from the Legends US-style hot rods, NASCA-inspired Pickup Trucks and more. There's plenty of exciting family activities off-track too with a huge fireworks display to draw the day to a close, free entertainment including circus kill shows, an ice rink and an Ed Sheeran tribute act, plus much more. Adult tickets are just £25 on the gate with reductions for teens and seniors, plus children under 13 go FREE.
