Smith and Powell storm to pole position at Brands Hatch

Saturday, November 02 2019

Brands Hatch's heavyweight British Truck Racing and Fireworks weekend kicked off today with qualifying sessions for both the Division 1 and Division 2 categories in damp conditions.

Local driver Steven Powell will start the day's first Division 2 race from pole after storming his way around the Indy circuit quicker than the rest, with Ryan Smith setting the fastest lap in the premier Division 1 category.

The five-tonne behemoths of Division 2 were first to take to the track for a 15-mintue qualifying session with Steven Powell proving to be a dominant force early on. Second place went the way of DAF driver John Bowler whilst reigning champion Luke Garrett completed the top three, resulting in two MAN TGX machines in the top three.

Plenty of action unfolded in Division 1 with ten-time champion Stuart Oliver briefly setting the fastest time of the session early on. Oliver looked set to claim pole position after a spin for Smith at Graham Hill bend however minutes later Ryan Smith stormed his way into first by just 0.580s.

Jamie Anderson completed the top three whilst Simon Reid claimed fourth in Iveco Stralis machinery. Rounding out the top five was David Jenkins.
