Red alert – MotoGP star takes first BSB win at Donington Park

Saturday, May 25 2019

Scott Redding took his first Bennetts British Superbike Championship win at Donington Park today, becoming the 50th race winner in the series' history after a nail-biting battle on the East Midlands venue's National circuit.

The Be Wiser Ducati rider's teammate Josh Brookes crashed out in dramatic fashion on lap six and a cat-and-mouse fight followed between the front riders, with Tommy Bridewell and Tarran Mackenzie repeatedly trading places and Xavi Forés battling for his first podium finish.

Redding, who joined the championship from MotoGP this season, said afterwards he made a dreadful start from the front row of the grid and struggled to find his pace for a while, but when it all fell into place he soon caught the duo ahead of him and never looked back.

"I got stuck in there and we had a good little battle for a couple of laps, trying to overtake going three abreast into the last chicane, and I love that sort of race. Everything was very clean, everyone respected each other, that was really good.

"And I thought 'right I need to try and get out of this because it isn't going to end well with three of us on the last lap' and I didn't know that Xavi was even just on the back of us so I managed to get a little gap and maintain it, and the win just felt phenomenal for me out there.

"It's been coming and waiting for a long time and now I've got it, it feels a lot of weight off my shoulder and I feel much better and I think we can get many more," he said.

Mackenzie leads the championship by seven points from Bridewell going into tomorrow's second race day of the special triple-header, racing on the National circuit for the first time since 2002.

The McAMS Yamaha rider, who endured a tough second round at Oulton Park, said today's podium which extended his championship lead was "perfect", while Forés said his third-place finish was such an achievement that it felt more like a win.
